Tsunami danger zones

Coasts under a tsunami warning, advisory or watch get colored on this map. The dots are big ocean earthquakes from the last 30 days close enough to send a tsunami your way.

What the tsunami centers say

Scientists in Alaska and Hawaii watch every ocean, all day and all night. Here's what they last said about quakes near you.

If the ground shakes near the ocean

  1. Drop, cover, hold on until the shaking stops.
  2. Walk uphill or away from the water right away. Don't wait for a siren. The shake is the warning.
  3. If the ocean suddenly pulls way out and you see the sea floor, a wave is coming. Go up high, fast.
  4. Stay up high for hours. The first wave is often not the biggest.
